A Gutter Scoop – An Essential Tool For Cleaning Gutters

No one would hammer a screw. Each tool we use as homeowners or property managers has a specific purpose that makes the job we’re doing easier, faster, or both.

The Gutter Scoop is one such tool, that when used for specific debris in your gutters, can make gutter cleaning each spring and fall almost a breeze.

What It Is

The Gutter Getter is designed to scoop material out of your gutters with ease. It’s made from a durable plastic that can withstand hours of use, yet is also flexible enough to fit inside gutters and under hangers. I like the stout handle. The handle is strong and lets you lift pounds of dirt out at a time without breaking. The tool is also well-designed. It feels comfortable and the scoop portion sits far enough away from the handle that you don’t rub your fingers against the gutters while using it.

I’ve tried lots of tools and gizmos to make gutter cleaning easier. The Gutter Getter is one of the best there is. Don’t just take my word for it – The Craftsman Blog, a leading renovation site loves this tool too. Find their write-up here – https://thecraftsmanblog.com/the-6-best-gutter-cleaning-tools/.

Hopefully, by now you’re on board with getting a gutter scoop. There’s one type of debris that is in everyone’s gutters that it excels at removing.

Dirt – You’ve Met Your Match

When you clean gutters professionally, you learn that having several ways to clean them is important. During a recent gutter cleaning in Colorado Springs, I encountered a lot of dirt. Like so much dirt it’s a new company record. The Gutter Getter did a fantastic job on that job – allowing me to remove the dirt quickly.

Getting out dry dirt and shingle grit is the best debris to use this tool on. I’ve found that leaves are too light unless they are wet and matted together. Read on for some feedback on the tool.

No Tool Is Perfect

Even a simple and well-designed tool like the Gutter Scoop has aspects of its design that can be improved. My experience cleaning gutters in Black Forest earlier this year demonstrated this point. Nestled among pine trees, I knew there would be tons of wet and mucky pine needles to get out. That combination proved to be true, however, I struggled to remove the pine needles using the scoop. It was hard to keep the pine needles in the scoop and I wished there was some type of lip on the end of the tool. Point taken – match the tool to the job. One other consideration is will the tool fit in your gutters?

The Gutter Getter will fit in most gutters. However, I’ve found that on older homes or homes with a narrow width of gutters, the scoop doesn’t fit. So consider the width of your gutters versus the width of the tool before purchasing one. Online specs show it’s 3.13 inches wide for reference.

The two concerns are very minor. I still use the Gutter Getter on almost every job and highly recommend it. If I were to pick up only one tool to make gutter cleaning easier- the Gutter Getter would be it.

Where To Get One

This tool is available at most home supply stores. The brand I use and recommend is the Amerimax Plastic Gutter Scoop. It is sometimes called the Gutter Getter. Make sure you check the description before you purchase one, as there is a tool with a similar name, but is a scraper.

Should You Get The Gutter Scoop

I think most homeowners would benefit by adding a Gutter Scoop to their tool collection. I’ve found it to be valuable and durable. The Gutter Getter is like a good designated hitter. Bring it in for specific situations and the tool will help knock your gutter-cleaning chore out of the park (or at least off the honey-do list).
